Stepping into my ‘Zone of Natural Genius’

Launch Message

I am excited today to open the doors of my new business – www.richardshrapnel.com.

Looking back, it’s been a long journey of 40 years to reach this point. But now, I truly believe I am working in my ‘Zone of Natural Genius’, that space where my unique skills and capabilities are applied to their fullest. A liberated space where you not only tremendously enjoy what you do, but you soar with no limits to your ultimate success.

If you are now totally bewildered by what you just read, then I would recommend you read a book by Gay Hendricks titled The Big Leap. In his book, Gay puts forward the thesis that we often find ourselves working and having careers in areas at which we may be good and even excellent, but it’s not where we can truly excel – we are still limited. There are many reasons why we find ourselves in careers that may only represent a ‘Zone of Excellence’ for us. Often we do not even recognise that we have limited ourselves and the challenge is to consciously see the ceiling you are hitting and to break through it.

In my previous role, I led the business consulting team in a well-regarded professional services firm. I enjoyed it and I was excellent at what I did, but I always had the desire to step outside those confines and take it to another level.

Many colleagues asked that after 40 years and now being in senior position, why not just sit back and enjoy? Others spoke of the ‘very brave’ decision, which, I thought, was code for ‘you are taking a terrible risk’. But risk is offset by faith, and stepping forward with only one certainty: there will be no regrets.

So, what am l doing? I’ve coined the acronym ‘gMAB’ – global management advisory business – to describe it. It’s a business that will support business leaders, around the world, grow great businesses of all shapes and sizes.

With the internet and digitalisation enabling a globally connected community, I can reach all corners of our world and speak to business leaders at a level not possible even 10 years ago. And we are only at the start of this evolution.

I have released my initial Active Knowledge series of guides, which will be expanded in 2017 and beyond. This series is built upon the principle of one-part thinking, one-part doing, the basis of which is wisdom that inspires momentum and knowledge that drives action.

Here is one of my resources that you may download, free, Leadership Talk: Great Leaders Building Great Businesses.

I am a writer, speaker and occasional advisor and I will grow and connect Entrepreneurs+ from around the world in the pursuit of building great businesses.

I believe the worth of a truly great business lies in its sense of purpose, its focus on meeting the needs of a community and in delivering ever improving value. Focus on value and profit will follow, focus on profit and the business will be directionless.

I invite you to join me on this journey.

Active Knowledge Questions:

Are you working in your ‘zone of natural genius’, that space you are uniquely suited to do? How will you know? Well you will find yourself using both your innate gifts and practiced strengths. It should feel effortless and creative and just plain good. It should feel so natural that you may not even recognise you are working in the zone.

So are you? If you’re not, are you ready to take the leap?

All the best in the success of your business
