A Little About Me
Thank you for taking the time to find out a little bit more about who I am.
I would describe myself as a business strategist but that’s an overused term these days and has lost a lot of its meaning. I have a passion for growing exceptional businesses and have spent my life understanding what makes some businesses great and others just ordinary. I understand strategy, growth and competitiveness. I know the theory and I know the practice. I know how to craft it and more importantly how to deliver it.
Strategy, growth and competitiveness – I’ve lived it, studied it, used it, consulted in it, taught it, spoken about it and written about it – for decades. I’ve done this across the globe. It’s in my blood. It’s the way I think and am wired. And, as with all things, I take it to a new level – continually.
As a strategist, my focus is on what creates success and understanding not only what makes businesses successful but also the people behind them. Businesses only comprise the people who lead them and work within them. I believe the success of any business lies in developing the competitive engine of that business.
The competitive engine is those agents that allow and support that business to identify its purpose, to understand the needs of its customers, and to build and sustain the organisation to deliver more value to those customers than anyone else, without question. These are great businesses – businesses that are competitively fit and tactically alive, businesses that understand real sustainable growth.
Over the last ten years I have also researched the dynamics, barriers and success strategies for businesses in transition, what many call succession, across some 56 countries. I applied my expertise as a business strategist to develop global best practices for the transition of closely-held businesses. The outcome was a topographical guide for orienteering succession that supports the compounding of wealth across generations, while supporting family unity, individual growth and a sense of contribution for all.
Today I am a writer, speaker and occasional advisor. My purpose is to support business leaders around the world to build great businesses of all shapes and sizes. I achieve this through an approach that melds education and application – one part thinking, one part doing. The basis of which is knowledge that inspires momentum; wisdom that drives action.
I bring energy and passion to everything l do. My approach is always focused and pragmatic – so what you see is what you get.
I believe the worth of a truly great business lies in its sense of purpose, its focus on meeting the needs of a community and in delivering ever improving value. Focus on profit and the business will be directionless. Focus on value and profit will follow. This is strategy at work.
I understand what drives the competitiveness of a great business. I take pride in delivering the knowledge needed to create the outcomes to build and sustain that competitiveness.
